Newtech brakes
Whatever happened to the full contact brake pad? wasn't a company called newtech working on it?

Is that the one that looks like a clutch pressure plate? Wasn't a Canadian race car driver using that a few years ago on a Porsche 911?

Even Senna confessed he occasionally went too far, as was the case in qualifying for the 1988 Monaco Grand Prix, where he became a passenger on a surreal ride into the unknown. Already on pole, he went faster and faster and was eventually over two seconds quicker than Prost in an identical McLaren. "Suddenly, it frightened me," Ayrton said, "because I realised I was well beyond my conscious understanding. I drove back slowly to the pits and did not go out anymore that day." |

I would image that such a braking system would have some serious cooling issues.

Brakes are already the strongest part of the car...
I imagine that tires are the biggest problem with getting a car to stop fast... not bigger / more contact between pad and rotor... not to mention added rotational and unsprung weight... But I'd listen to William... before me...

Yes, Interesting Idea.It is a reworked aircraft concept that has been modified for automotive use.aka.CF18 brakes.Carbon,Carbon composits, like our clutch assemblies.
We at Williams have a working model with electro magnetic brakes. No friction and no heat.Sensors determine the tires Mu and brake as hard as the tires grip allow. We are working on a way to store the energy generated in braking in an energy cell to reverse the electro magnetic process to launch the vehicle from a stand still for the first 20 to 30 feet until the engine kicks in. We have applied for a Gov't grant on this concept.I will keep you posted of the progress and we are right now in the process to build this system into a Racing Kart. We hope to have full scale test cars using the system by 06. William |

Ain't it great.Mid-fifties Cornbinder tech being applied to the modern race cars.

The car that waas using it several years ago was a Porsche 911 Turbo driven by Richard Spenard in the defunct Motorola Cup series.

Yeap, I remember watching him at the Molson Indy a few years ago. I recall he was black flagged in qualifying and had to start at the very back of the line-up (not just the back of his class). Less than half way through the race he has worked all the way back up to the top. Those brakes were unreal. |

I ran in the Jim Russell series the same year he did. I've never been able to say I raced against Spenard, but I can say I was in the same race.

I always say the same thing about Paul Tracy. We ran FF at the same time (85) and I say "I raced with PT" because to say I raced against him would be a gross overstatement. He was in a nice new V.D with new tires being run by Colin Hine. I was an old 79 V.D running old Hunter Jones castoff tires.
Yeah, it was the equipment!!! thats it, the equipment. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it. Of course it didn't have anything to do with the fact that he was just plain better than I ever was. We also had to contend with Scott Maxwell and a few others as well. Scott beat Paul on a pretty regular basis in those days. With Paul running Daytona this year, I'm really hoping Scott will be in similar machinery so we can see how they stack up now. J

william ...is the real issue of brake problems the brake fluid heating up to high..then causing brake fade? or is it a materials issue in the rotors and pads heating up to much and failing?
I was thinking about this a while ago, on using a modified hydralic system for brakes....where the system has a hydralic pump that has keeps the brake fluid flowing in a continous loop and a resevoir/cooler... the idea being that when you want to brake a proportional soliniod/valve gets closed on the "out" side of the fluid from the calipers thus applying pressure to the pots of the calipers..and the brake pedal would proportionately control the solinoid or valve...but it would never be in a fully closed position so the fluid would always be in circulation.... this would totally eleminate the overheating of the fluid...in fact maybe a new caliper design could be made to incorporate cooling channels in the caliper to further draw out heat..then the fluid reseviour could also have an air cooled "brake fluid cooler" as well the only downside of this system i can see is, if the engine stalls, or you lose power or the hydralic pump fails..you have no brakes...though i guess the soliniods/valve could be made to fail 1/2 shut thus applying some level of brakeing? does a system like this exist? or am i out to lunch?
